TAIPEI, Aug 28, 2008 (Asia In Focus via COMTEX) -- AUO | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Premier Liu Chao-shiuan Wednesday welcomed a massive investment plan by AU Optronics Corp. (TAIEX:2409), the world's third-largest maker of liquid-crystal displays (LCDs), to build four panel display plants in central Taiwan over the next 10 years. Liu welcomed the company's response to the government's i-Taiwan 12 infrastructure projects, which are partly aimed at forming a new cluster of high-tech industries in central Taiwan, to bring the area into better balance with northern and southern Taiwan.

* AU plans to earmark NT$400 billion (US$12.7 billion) over the next decade to construct the plants in the central county of Changhua branch of the Central Taiwan Science Park.

* Construction of the first plant is slated to begin in the second half of next year and to begin operations in 2011 or 2012, and AU Optronics will employ more than 10,000 workers by the time the plants are finished.
