In the second year of this industry award, which seeks to recognise the project, product or service that has made, or has the potential to make, the biggest contribution to the development of digital TV in the UK, the two front-runners are:
* Freesat - launched on 6 May 2008, Freesat provides a valuable alternative to the current free digital terrestrial and pay satellite options in the UK. As a joint venture between the UK's two leading public service broadcasters, Freesat is committed to delivering a high quality range of digital television, radio and interactive services - and to making them available to almost every household in the UK for only a one-off set-up payment for their choice of receiving equipment.
The success of Sky HD (last year's winner of this Award) suggests that Freesat is entering the market at a time when HD, interactive and VOD services are increasingly popular among viewers.
* BBC iPlayer - launched on Virgin Media on 30 April 2008 through the Red Button service, the BBC iPlayer became available through the Virgin Media Catch-up TV service to all 3.5 million customers on 1 June 2008. Since this date there have been over 10 million views of BBC programmes through the platform.
The BBC iPlayer has the potential to transform the viewing habits of UK audiences by bringing quality BBC on-demand content to the living room.
Richard Slee, Pace President for EMEA & APAC commented: "The UK is leading the way in the take up of new delivery models for digital content, as well as for the highest quality content. It makes sense that these two services should be battling for first place.
Simon Gauntlett, Technology Director at the DTG added: "The fact that there are two such innovative front runners for this year's Award shows why the UK is at the forefront of digital TV developments." The winning entry will be selected by the DTG Council. The Award presentation will take place at 5.30pm on Friday 12 September at the IBC show in Amsterdam on the Pace stand (1.B21).
