Originally developed for North America, the Impreza got a full redesign in June 2007 and is now sold in various markets around the world, primarily as a five-door hatchback. Overseas, the sedan version is now sold only in North America, but the automaker has decided to introduce it in Russia to capitalize on the fast-growing sedan market there.
In the Russian market, Fuji Heavy will offer two versions with 1.5- and 2-liter engines -- smaller than the 2.5-liter engine of the North American version. The firm expects to double Impreza sales in Russia to 7,000 in 2008, with 2,500 of them being sedans. Within several years, it expects sedans to account for 70 per cent of Impreza sales in that country.
Fuji Heavy expects Russian sales to rise 60 per cent to 25,000 vehicles in 2008, accounting for 25 per cent of its total European sales. Russia's automobile market has been surging since 2003 and is expected to overtake Germany's as Europe's largest around 2012.
