Around 90% of Verizon's Gulf Coast network is 'up and running' and technicians are now working to restore cell sites damaged by the storm. Mobile transmission units are reportedly being deployed to boost network capacity and Cells on Wheels (COWs) and Cells on Light Trucks (COLTs) and mobile generators were pre-deployed to the area to strengthen the network.
Verizon said that residents in the area who have lost landline phone services can make free telephone calls from Verizon stores, and the company has provided free phones to government agencies, emergency organisations and shelters in the Gulf Coast and surrounding evacuation cities.
Verizon Wireless is a joint venture between Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) and Vodafone (LSE: VOD) (NYSE: VOD).
