The phones will be collected at events throughout the city this autumn and recycled by the Verizon HopeLine programme. The programme refurbishes, recycles or sells the phones and donates the proceeds to domestic violence advocacy groups in the form of cash grants and prepaid wireless phones for victims.
Phones that cannot be recycled are disposed of in an environmentally sound manner. Verizon said that, since the programme began in 1999, 5 million phones have been collected, with 1 million of those being disposed of correctly.
Verizon Wireless is a joint venture between Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) and Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) (LSE: VOD).
