HANGING AT LUMIÃ?RE: PGA superstar Vijay Singh weathered Thursday's storm at Lumiere Place, enjoying lunch at Asia before trying his luck on the casino floor. Actor Kevin Spacey was recently spotted at the casino, where he stopped in to get a caffeine fix at the new Peet's Coffee & Tea. Disney's teen hunks, the Jonas Brothers, walked the casino's main promenade when they performed here; and so did the ageless Bruce Springsteen after his Scottrade concert. "American Idol's" David Cook hit the blackjack table when he was in town, and an ESPN crew was spotted tagging alongside Lumiere's poker room regular, Dennis Phillips, who is also the 2008 World Series of Poker chip leader. The feature on Phillips is set to air in the fall during the poker finals on the network.
SCIENCE TIME: Ashley Greenwell, a senior at St. Joseph's Academy, has placed third in a national high school competition sponsored by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers. The competition challenged students to identify the top engineering challenges of the next 50 years and to explain how agricultural and biological engineers can help meet those challenges. Greenwell got the award and a $1,000 prize for her entry. Louis Teng, of Rockville, Md., took first-place honors and won $4,000; Shruti Shrivastav, a junior at Moreau Catholic High School in Hayward, Calif., came in second place and won $2,000.
TRACK TRUCKIN': Pedal-to-the-metal Chrissy Wallace and a slew of locals will be taking in the action of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck race on Saturday at Gateway International Raceway. Wallace, 20, has averaged 24th in her previous three truck races this year. Her team includes some of the proud sons of Oran, Mo., including crew chief Mike Abner and mechanic Brent Glastetter. Wallace's Germain Racing teammate, Justin Marks -- he's driving the 9 truck, she's driving the 03 truck -- was born in St. Louis. Wallace and Marks will compete against the No. 63 entry fielded by the Mittler Brothers, whose raceshop is in Wright City. The 1:30 p.m. race can be seen on Cable TV's SPEED channel.
