Defense contractor BAE Systems said Thursday it had received a $622,000 government contract to build the high-tech helmet sensor. BAE will use existing staff to complete the contract at facilities in Jessup and Phoenix.
The Marine Corps ordered 1,320 Headbourne Energy Analysis and Diagnostic Systems, or HEADS. The device is a network of sensors placed inside a helmet that detect, measure and record acceleration and pressure.
The system is similar to a black box in an airplane, telling doctors after an incident the type of impact the soldier sustained. Collected data will be used to improve helmet design and devise treatment for mild traumatic brain injury.
In a statement, BAE Systems executive Sean Martin said it will help develop the next generation of helmets.
"This system will allow the USMC to better understand the forces individuals are exposed to, allowing for targeted development of protective equipment," Mr. Martin said.
Mounted to the inside of the helmet shell, the system is small, lightweight and is not noticeable to the wearer. It's compatible to the range of military helmets, including the U.S.M.C. Lightweight Helmet, the Advanced Combat Helmet and the Combat Vehicle Crewman Helmets.
BAE Systems engineers developed the system in cooperation with the Army and have already provided 5,500 sensor systems to the Army.
In addition to combat helmets, BAE's Jessup facility produces outer tactical vests and other military, law enforcement and survival accessories. The facility has doubled employment since 2006 and now employs more than 500.
Before being acquired by global defense giant BAE, the facility had been part of Jacksonville, Fla.-based Armor Holdings Inc., and had been privately-owned as Specialty Defense. With about 100,000 employees worldwide, BAE Systems' sales exceeded $31.4 billion last year.
