Buffalo Wild Wings will construct a 5,000-square-foot building just west of the mall's marquee on North Vermilion Street, according to Lisa Masengale-Acton, the mall's general manager. The free standing building, which will include a patio, will be constructed in what now is parking space, but not far from the main mall building. The site should open late this year.
The announcement comes during the same week when the mall lost Steve & Barry's, a clothing store. The store was one of 170 stores closed by Steve & Barry's new owners. The local site's performance did not play a role in the decision, according to corporate representatives.
Buffalo Wild Wings will offer a relaxed atmosphere.
"We are excited to be coming to Danville," Buffalo Wild Wings franchise consultant Kirk Hartman said in a press release. "Buffalo Wild Wings is a restaurant where guests can pull their tables together, watch sports on TV and share good food and good times. We feel that our concept is a terrific fit for this town."
Kevin O'Laughlin, the local franchise holder, credited Mayor Scott Eisenhauer and city officials for their cooperation in bringing the restaurant to the mall. City officials last month approved a rebate of a portion of the city's share of the sales tax to the mall to add incentives to tenants.
Eisenhauer said he welcomed the restaurant and its investment in the community.
Masengale-Acton said the mall's owners hope the announcement will be the first of several yet to come.
"We look forward to working with this tenant and welcome the excitement and enthusiasm they will generate," she said in a release. "It is our hope that with the addition of this restaurant that our center will continue to grow."
Masengale-Acton said the mall's California-based owners continue to search for tenants. She said interest had been shown by several other retail stores in the space once occupied by Hobby Lobby and Goody's. The mall now houses 30 national tenants and attracts more than 1 million shoppers each year, according to its owners.
The last three stores, including Steve & Barry's, to close all suffered problems due to the national economy.
"We have to be realistic," Masengale-Acton said. "Retail, as a whole, is suffering. Just about every mall has been affected by Chapter 11 (bankruptcy) filings.
"The best thing people can do is to come out and support the stores we have."
