Sep 08, 2008 (Vanguard/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) -- NGG | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- AFTER nearly ten years of agitation, the ancient settlement of Kaiama, the hometown of late Major Isaac Boro, has been finally linked to the national grid by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

The commissioning of the project was turned into a huge carnival by the elated indigenes of the community many of whom travelled from far and near to witness the colourful event.

Performing the commissioning of the 33KVA transmission line which is expected to be extended to Odi town also in the Kolokuma-Opokuma local government area, the Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Hon Peremobowei Ebebi described the linking of the community as historic given place of Kaiama as the birthplace of late Boro as host to the famous Kaiama Declaration of 1998.

The deputy governor who called on the people of the community to protect the facility however noted with sadness the high incidence of hostage taking in the Niger Delta stressing that this has stalled development in the region.

According to him, the region cannot be crying for development while its youths are involved in activities that are inimical to the developmental aspiration of the region.

The deputy governor charged traditional rulers, community leaders and youth leaders in the region to prevail on their people who are fond of kidnapping expatriates to desist forthwith as the full weight of the law would be brought on any offender caught.

His words, "We cannot be crying for development of the region, while our brothers are involved in stalling construction work in the region.

"You will recall that construction giant, Julius Berger Plc and Setraco pulled out of the region as a result of militants' onslaught on their expatriates. We cannot continue to allow this to happen. I urge community leaders to report to the police such criminal elements in their communities.

"Developing the Niger Delta is a collective responsibility. All and sundry must therefore do their best to ensure that the good things of life gets to our communities so that gradually we will solve the problems we face presently."

While assuring communities which are yet to be linked to the national grid to exercise patient as both the state and federal government are doing everything humanly possible to get them connected he urged the people of Kaiama to not only safeguard the transmission lines but also the substation from vandals.

The deputy governor also used the opportunity to warn land developers not to encroach on the right of way of power lines as such actions are not only unlawful but dangerous to the health of those who build and live within the right of way.

In his remark, the Senator representing Bayelsa Central Senatorial District, Senator Emmanuel Paulker, commended the NDDC for the taking the bold initiative saying the National Assembly will continue to prevail on the federal government to adequately fund the commission so as to accelerate the developmental aspiration of the region.

Describing the present federal government allocation to the NDDC as inadequate, he also stressed the need for direct massive federal intervention in the region so as to accelerate the development of the Niger Delta.

"The National Assembly will not rest on its oars until the issue of adequate funding for the NNDC is addressed. Interestingly, the president we have has a listening ear and I am quite optimistic that he will release funds for the commission. The bulk of the money is from here and it is only proper that the region is accorded proper attention such as direct massive federal intervention."

In his address, the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Mr. Timi Alaibe described the electrification of Kaiama, the hometown of late Major Isaac Boro as a turn point for communities in the area.

The NDDC boss who said the project would be extended to other communities in the area however pleaded with the natives to protect the facility which according to him is expected to boost economic activities in the area.

He noted that the various tiers of government are trying to bring development to the doorsteps of the people but lamented the action of some communities who are in the habit of disturbing contractors from carrying out their jobs which is meant to better their lot.
