Targeted for recycling are eight items made with Toray's nylon-6 synthetic fibers, including shopping bags, pouches and apparel. Toray will purchase the collected products for 1 yen per kilogram and return them to a liquid raw material state at its plant, using this material to produce recycled nylon. After the nylon is processed into cloth, it will again be made into bags and pouches for Muji stores.
Using recycled nylon can reportedly cut carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 70 per cent compared with using new nylon made from crude oil.
The companies aim to recycle around 1 per cent of targeted items this fiscal year. In the future, they intend to expand the lineup of products using nylon-6 and increase recovery rates.
Although the firms acknowledge that the new endeavor will not be profitable, it is expected to bolster their stance on environmental preservation.
