EMC Insurance Group Leads Tuesday's AMBG as Global Insurance Index Declines 0.91%

OLDWICK, N.J., Sep 17, 2008 (A. M. Best via COMTEX) -- EMCI | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The AMBG closed Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 949.07 (-0.91%). Of the 15 A.M. Best stock indexes, seven rose and eight declined. Leading A.M. Best's Global Insurance Composite Index (AMBG) were EMC Insurance Group (+13.77%) and Chubb (+13.46%). Trailing the list of global insurance stocks were American International Group Inc. (-21.22%) and Swiss Reinsurance (-13.03%).

The U.S. Property/Casualty Insurance Index led the sector indexes, with the Asia/Pacific Insurance Index trailing the list. In descending order, the A.M. Best Insurance Stock Indexes closed at:

The European Insurance Index (AMBEUR) closed at 976.27 (-5.31%)%. Leading the AMBEUR were Hiscox (+2.04%) and Amlin plc (+1.13%). Trailing the AMBEUR were Swiss Reinsurance (-13.03%) and ING Groep N.V. (-8.75%).

The Asia/Pacific Insurance Index (AMBAP) closed at 1153.18 (-7.96%). Leading the AMBAP were QBE Insurance Group Ltd. (+1.00%) and Singapore Reinsurance Corp. (0.00%). Trailing the AMBAP were Tokio Marine Holdings (-12.70%) and China Insurance International Holdings (-12.52%).

The Global Reinsurance Index (AMBGR) closed at 1092.45 (-0.59%). Leading the AMBGR were W.R. Berkley Corp. (+12.53%) and Axis Capital Holdings (+9.34%). Trailing the AMBGR were Swiss Reinsurance (-13.03%) and China Insurance International Holdings (-12.52%).

The Global Broker Index (AMBGB) closed at 1143.71 (+2.53%). Leading the AMBGB were Brown & Brown (+7.12%) and Aon (+2.95%). Trailing the AMBGB were Jardine Lloyd Thompson Group plc (-3.64%) and Benfield Group (-2.07%).

The Global Multi-Line Insurance Index (AMBGML) closed at 705.22 (-3.09%). Leading the AMBGML were HCC Insurance Holdings (+8.65%) and Delphi Financial Group (+5.17%). Trailing the AMBGML were AIG (-21.22%) and Hannover Rueckversicherungs AG (-6.86%).

The Global Nonlife Insurance Index (AMBGNL) closed at 1142.86 (+1.61%). Leading the AMBGNL were EMC Insurance Group (+13.77%) and Chubb (+13.46%). Trailing the AMBGNL were Swiss Reinsurance (-13.03%) and Tokio Marine Holdings (-12.70%).

The Global Life Insurance Index (AMBGL) closed at 991.13 (-2.07%). Leading the AMBGL were Kansas City Life Insurance (+11.95%) and Prudential Financial Inc. (+9.15%). Trailing the AMBGL were China Insurance International Holdings (-12.52%) and ING Groep N.V. (-8.75%).

The U.S. Multi-Line Insurance Index (AMBUML) closed at 314.49 (-1.41%). Leading the AMBUML were HCC Insurance Holdings (+8.65%) and Delphi Financial Group (+5.17%). Trailing the AMBUML were AIG (-21.22%) and Atlantic American Corp. (0.00%).

The U.S. Life Insurance Index (AMBUL) closed at 1196.29 (+1.80%). Leading the AMBUL were Kansas City Life Insurance (+11.95%) and Prudential Financial Inc. (+9.15%). Trailing the AMBUL were Protective Life Corp. (-7.90%) and Genworth Financial (-4.33%).

The U.S. Life and Health/HMO Insurance Index (AMBULH) closed at 1082.22 (+0.15%). Leading the AMBULH were Kansas City Life Insurance (+11.95%) and Prudential Financial Inc. (+9.15%). Trailing the AMBULH were Protective Life Corp. (-7.90%) and Coventry Health Care (-6.19%).

The U.S. Health and HMO Index (AMBUH) closed at 959.05 (-1.96%). Leading the AMBUH were Triple-S Management Corp. (+3.20%) and Aflac Inc. (+2.98%). Trailing the AMBUH were Coventry Health Care (-6.19%) and Penn Treaty American (-5.36%).

The U.S. Insurance Brokers Index (AMBUB) closed at 1129.31 (+2.90%). Leading the AMBUB were Brown & Brown (+7.12%) and Aon (+2.95%). Trailing the AMBUB were Willis Group Holdings (+0.85%) and Marsh & McLennan Cos. (+2.83%).
