The automaker plans to first install the new airbag system on the driver's side of its Life minicar, which is slated for release in Japan in November.
The new airbag features a spiral-shaped seam structure that enables faster deployment. A protective surface is formed in two-thirds of the time needed by conventional airbags.
The new design and lower air pressure prevent the airbag from protruding into occupant space as much as conventional models that are widely in use. This reduces the chances of injuring the occupant when it inflates, according to Honda.
