"We have no intention of adopting Blu-ray for our DVD players and recorders," Corporate Senior Vice President Yoshihide Fujii said in a press conference to announce new products.
Toshiba, which had poured resources into HD DVD as the next-generation DVD format, announced in February that it would get out of the business. This marked its surrender in the format war to the Sony Corp. (TSE:6758)-led Blu-ray camp.
From mid-November, the firm is set to launch such new products as hard drive-equipped DVD recorders. It aims to compete with Blu-ray devices by offering products that enhance the picture quality of DVDs.
Separately, Toshiba said it will fully revamp its lineup of Regza LCD televisions. It plans to roll out 18 models, ranging from 32-52 inches, from early October. The TVs are expected to retail for about 140,000 yen (US$1,336) to 530,000 yen (US$5,059) or so.
