BEIJING, Sep 24, 2008 (SinoCast via COMTEX) -- SCOR | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- China's Internet search engine giant Baidu.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: BIDU | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) took a 27.4% share in the Asia-Pacific market in July, replacing its archrival Yahoo! as the No. 2 largest search engine for the first time, according to a latest report unveiled by US-based Internet research firm comScore, Inc. (NASDAQ: SCOR).

The aggressive growth of Baidu in Asia-Pacific is in part attributed to its debut in Japan a year earlier.

Baidu is likely to catch up with Internet search titan Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) in the Asia-Pacific market in the future, benefiting from the growing number of netizen in the region, said Will Hodgman, executive vice president for comScore Asia-Pacific Operation. In July, Google remained the top player in Asia-Pacific online search market with a 33.5% share, 6% larger than Baidu's share.

Presently, Baidu monopolizes 65.8% of the online search market in China, ranking first among its peers, according to latest statistics.
