Companies are selected based on percentage revenue growth over five years from 2003 to 2007. To be considered, Technology Fast 50 entrants must: have operating revenues of at least $50,000 in 2003 and at least $5,000,000 in 2007; be headquartered in Washington state; own proprietary technology or proprietary intellectual property that contributes to a significant portion of its operating revenues or devote a significant proportion of revenues to the research and development of technology.

The top five companies in the Fast 50 rankings represent a variety of products including Isilon's clustered data storage systems and software, Talyst's medication tracking and management systems, nLight's semiconductor lasers and fibers, Insitu's unmanned-aircraft systems and Attenix's software that assists companies in finding information quickly and efficiently.
Winning companies were evenly split between publicly traded and privately held companies, with 27 being privately held and 23 being publicly traded. As in the past years, the software industry has the strongest representation, with 16 companies on the list this year. Other industries represented include: semiconductor, scientific and technical instrumentation, computer and peripherals, internet, media and entertainment, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals and medical equipment. Winning companies came from every corner of the state.
A special category called "Rising Stars" recognizes companies that have been in business a minimum of three years, but less than five years. Powerit Solutions, provider of power management solutions that monitor use of power to lower utility usage is the 2008 Rising Star, with 1,581 percent revenue growth.
