Sep 28, 2008 (American News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- STLOF | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- It's that time of year again! Northern State University has begun preparations for its 2008 homecoming celebration. The theme this year is entitled "What Happens at Gypsy Days Stays at Gypsy Days."

The Las Vegas-inspired festivities kick off at 8 p.m. Monday with a chance to meet the royalty candidates. The program, "Royal Crown Casino: Playin' Cards with the Candidates," will take place in Thunder's Lair in the basement of the NSU student center.

The activities continue through the week. "Lunch for a Buck" will begin at noon Tuesday on the Campus Green. Judging for the Residence Hall Decorating Contest will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Wednesday's events include the intramural-sponsored Frisbee Golf Scramble at 4 p.m. and the 7 p.m. "Spirit of Gypsy Days" program planned in Thunder's Lair by Campus Ministries.

The NSU Foundation's annual meeting will be at noon Thursday in Jerde Hall. At 7 p.m. Thursday, the Royalty Coronation will take place in the Johnson Fine Arts Center on the main stage.

"After coronation, come join the party!" according to a press release. The Johnny Holm Band will perform in the Barnett Center starting at 8:30 p.m. This event is sponsored by the Campus Activities Board and is free to all NSU students with a current school ID; otherwise there is a $5 charge for the public.

Friday's activities kick off at noon with the Gold Luncheon in the Student Center's Centennial Rooms. For all those alumni who wish to see how things have changed, campus tours will be given all afternoon, beginning at 1 p.m. and ending at 4 p.m. To be included on a tour, please meet at the Beckman Building. Friday evening's events begin at 5 p.m. with the Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame Banquet at the Alonzo Ward Plaza, 104 S. Main St.

For all NSU football fans and players, past and present, the "1950-59 Football Alumni Reunion" will begin at 8 p.m. at the AmericInn, 310 Centennial St. This includes a special recognition of the 1953 championship team. The night's scheduled events end with the CAB-sponsored hypnotist Fredrick Winters, who will be performing in the Krikac Auditorium starting at 9 p.m.

Gypsy Day's grand finale of events begins early Saturday morning with the "Steps for Shep" Memorial Fun Run and Walk at 7:30 a.m. The Gypsy Day Parade begins at 9 a.m. Saturday on Main Street.

This year's parade marshals are Mayor Mike Levsen and his wife, Stacy. After the parade, area high school bands will converge on the NSU Campus Green for the annual High School Bands Awards Ceremony starting at noon. Also at noon, the Alumni Picnic and Tailgate kicks off at the Clark Swisher Activities Complex.

"At 1 p.m., come and cheer on your Wolves Soccer team as they take on Southwest Minnesota State (University of Marshall, Minn.) at the Jerde Soccer Field," according to a press release. "And, of course, make sure you make it back out to the Swisher Activities Complex by 2:30 p.m. as the Wolves kick off against the (University of) Minnesota-Crookston Golden Eagles."

The NSU Bookstore will be open for special hours from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the Student Center, and at the Clark Swisher Activities Complex from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
