Clinical Xpert Charge Capture 2.0 allows physicians to record charges and procedures via their BlackBerry smartphones and Palm(R) and Windows(R) Mobile handheld devices, regardless of location. Charges are delivered to a centralized Web portal for use by hospital and physician practice administrators and coders and also for integration into practice management and billing systems.
Part of the Clinical Xpert suite of mobile and Web-based workflow solutions, Charge Capture 2.0 offers complete functionality for BlackBerry smartphones, usability enhancements for doctors and extensive new capabilities for billing administrators. The Clinical Xpert suite (originally developed by Mercury MD, which is now part of the Healthcare business of Thomson Reuters) includes solutions for mobile and Web-based clinical data access, clinical surveillance, electronic backup of core HIS systems, medication reconciliation, and streamlined care-team communication.
"We first deployed Clinical Xpert Navigator on our physicians' BlackBerry smartphones last year and now have more than 100 doctors using it regularly," said Mike Hibbard, vice president of clinical informatics at Mercy Health Partners in Cincinnati, Ohio. "Bringing Charge Capture functionality to the BlackBerry platform represents a significant addition to an already powerful solution."
The process of recording and submitting charges for physicians in hospitals is often inefficient and inaccurate. In many hospitals, charges are jotted down on paper during rounds, or simply written down hours after the event. The results are often incomplete and inaccurate, leading to lost revenue when medical claims are not submitted for payment or are rejected due to inaccurate or incomplete information. Billing cycles can stretch into weeks as significant administrative effort is required to produce accurate claims. By using Charge Capture, hospitals and practices can increase their total charges while decreasing their time to bill. Some Charge Capture customers have shown 5 to 8 percent increases in total revenue within the first calendar quarter of use, while reducing billing cycle time from two weeks to less than two days.
In addition to adding support for BlackBerry smartphones, Charge Capture 2.0 features a number of usability enhancements for doctors, administrators and coders. The new release includes the use of defined keywords, enhanced lookup features, and customization capabilities. The Web-based portal has been redesigned for usability, with a new user interface, enhanced data downloads, and enhanced reporting and customization tools for coders.
