Sharp starts producing thin-film solar cells at its Japan plant

OSAKA, Oct 2, 2008 (Asia In Focus via COMTEX) -- SHCAY | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- SHARP CORP. (TSE:6753) said Wednesday that it has begun mass-producing thin-film solar cells at its factory in Katsuragi, Nara Prefecture, at a pace equivalent to 160,000kw a year. This new type of solar cell is made by forming a thin silicon film on a glass substrate.

* Compared with more widely used crystalline solar cells, the thin-film type uses 1 per cent the amount of silicon.

* Sharp's thin-film solar cells are based on a large glass substrate measuring 1 x 1.4 meters. It achieves a 9 per cent power conversion efficiency, the highest in the industry for thin-film solar cells.
