Matthews police say the leak happened on Pommel Lane, in the Windrow subdivision. That is off Idlewild Road, between N.C. 51 and Interstate 485.
Police say a tree fell on a residential natural gas meter, triggering the leak. Emergency personnel, along with staff from Piedmont Natural Gas, are at the scene. Police also say the gas main has been shut off.
Authorities evacuated several nearby homes until the main was shut off.
No injuries have been reported.
