Construction of the hotel and convention center is planned on a 5.3-acre parcel at 25 Kiwanis Blvd. adjacent to the existing Comfort Inn.
The Comfort Inn is owned and operated by brothers Nitin and Kalpesh Shah of Blackwood, N.J., co-owners of the Hazwin Hospitality LLC development firm, which also proposes to construct the Wingate by Wyndham Hotel and Convention Center.
Conditions to the approval include compliance with recommendations of the borough engineer and borough fire chief.
Nitin Shah said business is brisk at the Comfort Inn, which inspired him and his brother to construct an additional hotel and a convention center at the West Hazleton site.
"Business is good at the Comfort Inn. The occupancy rate is high," Nitin Shah said.
According to Joseph Calabrese of RJD Engineering of Hazleton, site engineer for the Hazwin project, said plans include construction of a 300-seat convention center adjacent to a three-story hotel. The buildings will be separate, connected by a walkway and a shared 234-slot parking lot.
Calabrese said the project is currently in the permitting stage, during which permits and approvals, such as the Planning Commission's approval of the project's land development and subdivision plan, are obtained. The permitting stage is expected to last about a year with a startup of construction anticipated for late next summer.
The project has received a letter of confirmation from the Hazleton City Authority to provide water service to the facility, Calabrese said.
Because the entrance and exit to the hotel and convention center parking lot will not be onto a state highway -- Kiwanis Boulevard is a borough-owned street -- no state Department of Transportation permits are required for the project, Calabrese said.
Wyndham Worldwide is one of the world's largest lodging franchisor, encompassing nearly 6,500 hotels under 10 brands on six continents.
Wingate guest rooms are designed to function as both a bedroom and an office, with in-room desks, speakerphone, cordless phone, voicemail and conference-call capabilities, an in-room safe for valuables, an iron and ironing board and coffeemaker.
In addition, every Wingate by Wyndham property has exercise facilities and whirlpools, meeting space and a 24-hour business center, and serves a complimentary expanded hot breakfast.
The hotel's signature service includes free high-speed wired and wireless Internet access, which means guests can be anywhere in the hotel and still be online.
Following the Planning Commission's unanimous approval of the land development and subdivision plan, Matt Hostetler, managing director of Franchise Development for Wyndham Worldwide, said "We are happy to be here. We are proud to be doing business in West Hazleton."
