(financialwire.net via COMTEX) -- FRPT | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- October 3, 2008 (FinancialWire) -- With plans to redeploy more Marines to Afghanistan later this fall, companies including Force Protection (NASDAQ: FRPT | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating) (Current Market Cap: US$185.14 Mil.) and General Dynamics are being asked to reengineer mine-resistant vehicles to more effectively move over the country's mountainous terrain.

High altitudes, dispersed battalions and restricted travel zones are among the serious challenges facing the Marines on its missions in Afghanistan, where violence has recently escalated according to officials. General David McKiernan has made urgent requests for weapons and equipment, including more unmanned aerial surveillance drones and mine-resistant vehicles for operations.

Senior Marine Corps officials are concerned the current MRAPS are ill-equipped to handle the rocky terrain in Afghanistan, and are too heavy to easily transport to areas where they are needed.
