National Western Life Insurance Leads Friday's AMBG as Global Insurance Index Rises 0.82%

OLDWICK, N.J., Oct 06, 2008 (A. M. Best via COMTEX) -- NWLI | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The AMBG closed Friday, Oct. 3, at 921.93 (+0.82%). Of the 15 A.M. Best stock indexes, nine rose and six declined. Leading A.M. Best's Global Insurance Composite Index (AMBG) were National Western Life Insurance (+13.17%) and ING Groep N.V. (+10.77%). Trailing the list of global insurance stocks were Phoenix Cos. (-11.13%) and OneBeacon Insurance Group Ltd. (-10.36%).

The European Insurance Index led the sector indexes, with the U.S. Health and HMO Insurance Index trailing the list. In descending order, the A.M. Best Insurance Stock Indexes closed at:

The European Insurance Index (AMBEUR) closed at 1013.91 (+3.92%)%. Leading the AMBEUR were ING Groep N.V. (+10.77%) and Old Mutual plc (+6.61%). Trailing the AMBEUR were Paris Re Holdings (-4.25%) and Amlin plc (-1.86%).

The Asia/Pacific Insurance Index (AMBAP) closed at 1298.22 (+0.20%). Leading the AMBAP were Nipponkoa Insurance (+4.90%) and Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group Holdings (+1.92%). Trailing the AMBAP were Aioi Insurance Co. Ltd. (-4.23%) and Tower Ltd. (-3.78%).

The Global Reinsurance Index (AMBGR) closed at 1138.70 (+1.81%). Leading the AMBGR were ING Groep N.V. (+10.77%) and Aegon N.V. (+5.04%). Trailing the AMBGR were TransAtlantic Holdings (-9.40%) and XL Capital (-4.95%).

The Global Broker Index (AMBGB) closed at 1073.94 (+0.71%). Leading the AMBGB were Jardine Lloyd Thompson Group plc (+3.30%) and Marsh & McLennan Cos. (+1.74%). Trailing the AMBGB was Willis Group Holdings (-2.88%).

The Global Multi-Line Insurance Index (AMBGML) closed at 708.57 (+2.36%). Leading the AMBGML were Hartford Financial Services Group (+5.75%) and AXA S.A. (+4.67%). Trailing the AMBGML were Delphi Financial Group (-3.99%) and First Acceptance Corp. (-3.92%).

The Global Nonlife Insurance Index (AMBGNL) closed at 1172.21 (-0.21%). Leading the AMBGNL were United Fire & Casualty (+5.84%) and Nipponkoa Insurance (+4.90%). Trailing the AMBGNL were Affirmative Insurance Holdings Inc. (-9.51%) and CNA Financial (-9.47%).

The Global Life Insurance Index (AMBGL) closed at 895.26 (+0.91%). Leading the AMBGL were National Western Life Insurance (+13.17%) and ING Groep N.V. (+10.77%). Trailing the AMBGL were Phoenix Cos. (-11.13%) and FBL Financial Group (-9.22%).

The U.S. Property/Casualty Index (AMBUPC) closed at 1181.10 (-0.52%). Leading the AMBUPC were United Fire & Casualty (+5.84%) and Mercer Insurance Group (+4.51%). Trailing the AMBUPC were Affirmative Insurance Holdings Inc. (-9.51%) and CNA Financial (-9.47%).

The U.S. Multi-Line Insurance Index (AMBUML) closed at 256.09 (+0.23%). Leading the AMBUML were Hartford Financial Services Group (+5.75%) and American Financial Group (+1.90%). Trailing the AMBUML were Delphi Financial Group (-3.99%) and AIG (-3.50%).

The U.S. Life Insurance Index (AMBUL) closed at 1007.31 (-1.12%). Leading the AMBUL were National Western Life Insurance (+13.17%) and Genworth Financial (+4.11%). Trailing the AMBUL were Phoenix Cos. (-11.13%) and FBL Financial Group (-9.22%).

The U.S. Life and Health/HMO Insurance Index (AMBULH) closed at 940.14 (-1.28%). Leading the AMBULH were National Western Life Insurance (+13.17%) and Triple-S Management Corp. (+5.18%). Trailing the AMBULH were Phoenix Cos. (-11.13%) and FBL Financial Group (-9.22%).

The U.S. Health and HMO Index (AMBUH) closed at 866.94 (-1.46%). Leading the AMBUH were Triple-S Management Corp. (+5.18%) and Cigna (+3.82%). Trailing the AMBUH were Aflac Inc. (-3.25%) and UnitedHealth Group (-2.63%).

The U.S. Insurance Brokers Index (AMBUB) closed at 1053.97 (+0.59%). Leading the AMBUB were Marsh & McLennan Cos. (+1.74%) and Aon (+1.57%). Trailing the AMBUB was Willis Group Holdings (-2.88%).
