A Mercedes Vito 109CDI has become the first vehicle bearing the famous three-pointed star to join the fleet at Avonline plc, which operates as a technology partner to key service providers like Virgin Media, BT, Samsung and Cisco Systems.
The Long-bodied Vito is based at Avonline's Bristol headquarters, where it has been racked out for use as a mobile workshop for use by one of the company's vehicle service engineers. It will later operate throughout the south-west and south Wales, carrying equipment for specialist teams installing cable TV, telephone and broadband.
Avonline's new Mercedes has taken its place in a fleet of 500 vans that provide nationwide coverage from a network of seven strategically placed sites.
The Vito was acquired on a 30-month operating lease via in-house commercial vehicle finance arm Mercedes-Benz CharterWay. Servicing will be carried out by Bristol dealer Commercial Motors (South West).
"We have been looking at the Mercedes-Benz van range and were sufficiently impressed to acquire this Vito for longer-term evaluation," says Avonline's Fleet Manager Alan Thatcher.
"There is currently a gap in our fleet between smaller, car-derived vans and the large panel vans. The 2.7-tonne Vito could very well fit that niche. We'll be evaluating it across all aspects of the business."
He continues: "These are still early days but everyone who's been in the Mercedes has been impressed by how comfortable and car-like it is to drive."
In fact, the Vito boasts a range of standard features more usually associated with a luxury car. These include electric windows, remote central locking with comfort' closing and a CD-radio.
Safety is another important consideration, with Avonline always conscious of its Duty of Care obligations to employees. The Vito bristles with class-leading safety features, including the Adaptive ESP anti-skid program and ABS anti-lock brakes. It also comes also comes with a market-leading, unlimited mileage, three-year warranty.
"The safety braking systems on the Vito are something we were particularly keen on," adds Mr Thatcher, "but we'll also be evaluating it for things like fuel consumption."
