Airport parking fees set to rise: Albany International plans to increase fees in garage, long-term lots

COLONIE, Oct 07, 2008 (Albany Times Union - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- AIN | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- It will soon cost more to park in the garage and the long-term lots at Albany International Airport.

The price increases are part of an effort by the Albany County Airport Authority to boost revenues in the wake of a slowdown in air travel.

The steepest increases will be in the garage, where the seven-day fee will climb 16 percent to $64 from $55 currently. The five-day fee, meanwhile, increases nearly 14 percent to $50 from $44 now. The daily garage fee will rise 9 percent to $12 from $11 currently.

Long-term daily, five-day and seven-day rates will rise 12.5 percent to $9, $36 and $45, respectively. Short-term and economy lot rates will remain unchanged.

Under next year's proposed budget, the passenger facility charge, levied on each person flying out of the airport and included in the ticket price, will rise to $4.50 from $3. The fee pays for airport improvements.

There was no word on how quickly the fee increases will take effect.

The airport is facing what Bill O'Reilly, its chief financial officer, described as a $2 million "deviation in budget," as fewer people fly and airlines cut service.

The proposed 2009 budget estimates airport boardings will drop 6 percent next year from this year's budgeted figure, while aircraft operations will fall more than 20 percent.

Parking rates haven't been raised since 2003, airport Chief Executive John O'Donnell said.

The airport plans a three-month experiment in billboard advertising to see whether it can encourage people seeking a warmer climate to fly out of Albany.

Despite at least one member's uneasiness about spending $25,000 given the economy and the airport's financial challenges, the board approved a billboard campaign, "50 Ways to Leave Your Weather," that'll appear along major interstates in the Capital Region beginning Nov. 1.
