The IGCC facility would demonstrate, on a commercial scale, coal gasification-based combined cycle electrical power generation technology in a single train unit, and is designed to offer significant efficiency and emissions benefits over existing conventional coal-fired power generation technologies.
Gasification is the process in which any hydrocarbon feed coal, coke, asphaltenes, or heavy fractions of crude is converted into carbon monoxide and hydrogen using oxygen and steam. The resulting mixture, known as syngas, can be used as a more efficient fuel source than the direct combustion of the original fuel.
The Genesee IGCC project is currently in its second phase, which is scheduled for completion in 2009. If subsequent investment and construction decisions go as planned, a 270-megawatt generating station using the new technology would be targeted to commence operations in 2015.
