Randall Creek, 41, of Bowling Green, Ky., was arrested at the Days Inn motel at 12:11 a.m. Tuesday for the murder of Debbie Rediess, 46. She was shot in her driveway in Bowling Green Sunday morning.
Authorities in Black Hawk County were alerted that Creek might be in the area around 10 p.m. Monday.
"We didn't have any exact intel that he was coming this way," said Lt. Kent Smock of the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office.
An hour later, an Evansdale police officer spotted Creek's vehicle.
"It was just good police work," Smock said.
The county's tactical response team was called in to help with the situation, but Smock said Creek came out of his room before the team arrived.
During the time Creek was missing, authorities in Bowling Green received a steady stream of tips, according to the Daily News in Bowling Green.
The Kentucky State Police said they hadn't seen such an intense search for a suspect before.
"Typically you get information and then you won't get anything for a day or two, possibly a week or two," Trooper Todd Holder, spokesman for state police, told the Daily News. "In this case, there were tips coming in basically from the time of the murder until he was taken into custody." Authorites were able to trace his cell phone.
Evansdale is more than 650 miles from Bowling Green.
The U.S. Marshal's Service, Illinois State Police and Missouri Highway Patrol were involved in the search, state police said.
Creek waived his rights to an extradition hearing Tuesday morning during his initial appearance in court.
Authorities are waiting for a formal date to take him back to Kentucky. That could happen sometime in the next 10 days, Smock said.
Prior to and immediately after the incident, Creek made statements about his relationship with Rediess.
Police say Creek confessed in an e-mail to killing Rediess. Police say he also sent e-mails taunting police and threatening a jailer.
In an e-mail to the Daily News of Bowling Green hours before the killing, Creek said Rediess ended their relationship because he wouldn't set a wedding date. He apologized for what he did in the e-mail, and that he "assassinated her in her driveway," according to the Daily News.
In a separate letter to the Daily News, Creek said he was not armed and there wouldn't be a struggle or chase once he was found.
No weapons were found in Creek's possession when he was arrested.
