BOSTON, Oct 08, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- STT | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- State Street Corporation, the world's leading provider of financial services to institutional investors, today announced that it has received several honors recognizing the company's commitment to corporate social responsibility and citizenship. For the third consecutive year, State Street qualified for both the World and North America Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI). State Street was also recognized by the Boston Business Journal as the area's top charitable contributor for the third year in a row and received an award for its partnership with Boston-based nonprofit Year Up.

Launched in 1999, the DJSI track the financial performance of the leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide and provide asset managers with reliable, objective benchmarks to manage sustainability portfolios. The annual review of the DJSI is based on an assessment of corporate economic, environmental and social performance. State Street received a high assessment for its corporate governance and risk management practices, environmental reporting, and corporate citizenship initiatives, among others. State Street is one of only three financial services firms based in the US currently listed on both indexes this year.

The Boston Business Journal's Corporate Philanthropy Award is presented annually to the largest corporate charitable contributor in Massachusetts. In 2007, State Street contributed $33 million to nonprofit organizations in its headquarters state, including its own foundation. State Street was also the recipient of the Education Partner of the Year Award for its multi-year partnership with Year Up, an intensive training program that provides urban young adults with technical and professional skills. The organization's partnership with State Street has resulted in entry-level job opportunities for Year Up apprentices, funding from the State Street Foundation and mentoring opportunities. The Boston Business Journal presented State Street with these awards at its third annual Corporate Citizenship and Philanthropy Summit.

"Our inclusion on the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes and receipt of the Boston Business Journal's awards are testaments to State Street's continued commitment to being a responsible corporation," said George Russell, executive vice president and head of Community Affairs at State Street. "We are honored to be recognized along with local, national and global leaders in the areas of sustainability and corporate citizenship."
