Music by Broadway legends Gershwin and Bernstein will augment classical pieces by Mozart and Franz von Suppe and jazz numbers by Duke Ellington and Cole Porter.
The program also includes music from popular films "Hook" and "The Terminal" by John Williams as well as music from James Bond films.
The 90-minute show concludes with favorites "Over the Rainbow" from the "Wizard of Oz." and "America the Beautiful."
The theme of the pops-style performance is "Stage and Screen," according to Meg Whalen, the symphony's director of public relations.
"Pops shows typically involved mix of styles and mix of genres," Whalen said. "Pops have a lighter feel to them. They are less serious and more on the entertainment side."
Whalen said the 12 pieces being performed range in time from about seven to nine minutes in length.
"Compare that to a serious concerto, which can be about 45 minutes," she said.
She said that even the Mozart piece, from the opera, "The Abduction from the Seraglio," is "really fun."
Whalen explained that the story told in the opera is an intriguing one.
"It's about a Turkish harem and the overture includes music that was played by the Janissary military bands," she said. "There is a lot of percussion and it's really exciting music."
But William Barnhardt is concerned that not enough people will get a chance to hear it.
Barnhardt is the concert's event coordinator for the Noon Exchange Club.
He said that the idea came out of a brainstorming session between club members as a way to raise funds for the group's charities: The Boys & Girls Club and the Child Abuse Prevention Center in Statesville (SCAN Center for Stop Child Abuse Now).
He said club member Bill Spangler came up with idea after the renovation work on the Mac Gray Auditorium was completed.
"We knew the symphony had been here in the past and after Mac Gray was finished we thought it would be great to have them back and perform there," he said.
The idea may have been a good one, but it hasn't caught on yet. Less than one-fourth of the tickets for the concert have been sold.
Barnhardt said the auditorium holds 880 people and that only about 200 tickets have been sold.
"We want this to be an annual event, but I think we are going to have to rely on last-minute sales until we build a fan base," Barnhardt said.
The concert begins at 8 p.m.
Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for "students of any age," Barnhardt said.
"You can't get this level of quality entertainment for that price," Barnhardt said.
