"I was in front of the audience talking to him on the phone and asked him 'where are you?'" Joe Guiterrez organizer of the event said. "He's a little kid, never been out of California so he didn't have a concept of where he was and he answered 'I'm in Miami, California.'"
Gutierrez said audience members were a little disappointed they didn't get to see Paz perform but this coming weekend they will have two chances to catch the singer in person and on television.
Paz' will perform Saturday afternoon at the Henry Miller Wild West Weekend and then on national television as a competitor in Univision's "Sabado Gigante" -- the reason for his pulling out of the independence day celebration.
Producers of the Spanish-language variety show heard Paz sing and flew him out to Miami in September for a taping of the show which will air Saturday night at 8 p.m. on Comcast channel 2.
Paz said Miami was fun and that Don Francisco, the legendary host of "Sabado Gigante" was very nice. Paz participated in a talent competition for children the show features, the program's audience votes for the best performance.
The third-grader won't say if he won but only that he was very nervous.
"I wasn't nervous about singing just about the voting," he said. "I was number three and I was so nervous that I forgot my number."
For Paz is it unusual to be jittery since he is an old pro at singing in front of a live audience. He first began singing at the age of 4 and has performed at local venues such as the Merced County Spring Fair and California State University, Stanislaus.
Paz and his family family recently moved to Los Angeles after they faced some financial hardships in Los Banos but the move proved to be a mixed blessing because it allowed Paz to pursue his singing ambitions. "He began singing in many events and with a lot of famous people," Gutierrez said.
Paz also finished his first CD which will be released later this year, coupled with his national exposure on Sabado Gigante Gutierrez joked that he won't be able to bring Paz to Los Banos anymore. He will be too big. But Paz said he will always have a place in his heart for Los Banos and his friends at Lorena Falasco Elementary School where he was a student.
"I miss Los Banos that's the city that did the most for me in my singing," he said.
