Burkman, 54, replaces long-time board member Kim Peery, a former 17th District state legislator who served two full terms at Clark. Burkman's term will run through September 2013.
The five trustees form the college's governing body.
Burkman currently sits on the YWCA Clark County board, and on the board of the Fort Vancouver Regional Library District.
Before retiring in 2005, he was employed at Hewlett-Packard for 28 years, including time as research and development manager in Vancouver.
More recently, Burkman was Southwest Region planning manager for the Washington Department of Transportation.
Previously, he held a seat on the Vancouver City Council from 1998 through 2001; on the C-Tran board of directors from 1999-2001; and on the Southwest Washington Clean Air Agency from 1998-2001.
Burkman ran for state representative in the 17th District in 2006, but lost to fellow Democrat Pat Campbell in the primary contest.
