Candidates for two state legislative races, three county council seats and the county coroner's position turned out to respond to questions posed by panelists from local media outlets and the League of Women Voters.
All but one of the candidates turned out.
Both Republican Randy Head and Democrat Linda Klinck, candidates in Senate District 18, were there, as were incumbent Republican Rich McClain and his Democratic challenger, Tim Banter Jr., in House District 24.
Among the county council candidates, incumbent Republicans Ralph Anderson and Chod Gibson turned out, as did Democrats Julian Pugh and Gordon Southern. Only Republican newcomer Jeff LeDonne failed to make an appearance.
The forum also drew both coroner candidates, Republican George Franklin and Democrat Marvin Griest.
Primed with some suggestions from readers, the panelists had lots of questions, and I thought the candidates did an admirable job of formulating answers within the alloted time.
We weren't able to cover every possible topic, biut even with the questions we did ask, the forum ran slightly more than 2 hours, about 30 minutes longer than we had hoped.
Still, the candidates addressed a variety of topics, and I thought their responses gave the voters lots of information on which to base an informed choice. Congratulations to the league and the Logansport-Cass County Chamber of Commerce on putting together a great event.
In case you missed it, the forum will air several times on community access channel 18 on Logansport's Comcast cable. It's also available in audio form at pharostribune.com. You can click on our report of the forum to find a link.
Public sentiment
Who will local voters support in the presidential election?
Just reading today's Public Forum, you might get the impression that Barack Obama and Joe Biden have the edge. Two letter writers favor Obama and Biden. One favors John McCain and Sarah Palin.
Of course, if you look at the results of last week's online survey, you'll see McCain and Palin with a decided advantage. More than 400 people participated, and they gave the nod in the vice presidential debate to Palin by a margin of nearly 2 to 1.
Neither result, of course, is particularly scientific.
If I were betting, I'd bet local voters will back McCain, but I'd guess the margin will be considerably closer than our poll would suggest.
If you'd like to weigh in with an opinion, don't hesitate to send a letter to our Public Forum. Our last batch of election letters will be published Nov. 2. The length limit is 400 words, and the deadline is 5 p.m. Oct. 30.
Community blog
Readers are beginning to migrate toward our online community blog. We have a number of volunteer bloggers who regularly post comments there, and if you'd like to participate, you're more than welcome.
There's one key rule: You have to use your real name.
Not everyone likes that rule. One would-be participant sent me an e-mail noting that the whole point of participating in an online forum was the ability to do it anonymously.
The blog is not appropriate for that person, but it might be for you. Check it out and see.
