Beaver County Times, Pa., Scott Tady column: Slice of Bacon

Oct 12, 2008 (Beaver County Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- NWS | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Nobody shouts for "Footloose" while Bob Dylan is singing.

Such is the bane of Kevin Bacon and his band the Bacon Brothers, who nevertheless were engaging in their Pittsburgh area debut last Thursday at the Palace Theatre in Greensburg.

With Kevin and older brother Michael splitting lead vocals, the Bacon Brothers breezed through a 100-minute set sprinkled with four covers: George Harrison's "What Is Life," James Taylor's "Rainy Day Man," the Rolling Stones' "It's All Over Now" and Dylan's "I Shall Be Released." They saved that slow-ish Dylan song for the very end, which was a mistake because fans began bellowing for the theme from "Footloose" the moment Kevin announced the six-man band would be playing its final song.

Until that point, the Bacon Bros. had satisfied a chiefly middle-aged crowd of about 300 who had come out of curiosity, recognizing the rare opportunity to see a movie star in person. Judging by the applause and the conversations I overheard during intermission, spectators enjoyed the Bacon Brothers' original tunes, which had a rock 'n' roll core that occasionally branched out to folk, blues and mild country.

Kevin and Michael are gifted songwriters, scoring equally with rollicking, light-hearted fare like "I'm Glad I'm Not Married (To You)", and an anti-war song that preached religious tolerance while imploring governments to quit bombing innocent children.

Kevin capably played harmonica, acoustic guitar and congas. Michael proficiently strummed acoustic guitar, too, though his shining moments, instrumentally, came during his cello playing on the first two songs of the second set.

My fundamental criticism of the band is that both Bacons have thin voices. Their bassist chipped in with some background tenor, though maybe the Bacons should bolster their vocals by adding a few female background singers -- ones with soul, sass and sex-appeal.

I'm sure Kevin's wife of 20 years, Kyra Sedgwick, wouldn't mind.

BLANKET THE LAWN

How many butts can you squeeze onto a blanket?

The more the merrier if you're a ZZ Top or Brooks & Dunn fan taking advantage of the "Blanket the Lawn" promotion P-G Pavilion will offer Wednesday.

Arrive at the Burgettstown venue's box office after 5:30 p.m. with a blanket. Each person you can sit on that blanket will get a $10 lawn ticket for that night's ZZ Top-Brooks & Dunn show.

The previously postponed show, now the pavilion's season finale, begins at 7 p.m. with country singer Rodney Atkins.

Brooks & Dunn will play from 8 to 9:10 p.m., followed by ZZ Top from 9:40 to 10:50 p.m.

The final 10 minutes will feature a jam session with Brooks & Dunn joining ZZ Top.

PROS FOR CON

Think of the Facebook or MySpace photo ops Oct. 25-26, as TV's "The Incredible Hulk," Darth Maul from "Star Wars", "Jaws" from the James Bond movies and Jason from "Friday the 13th Part VI" appear at the Pittsburgh Indoor Soccer Arena in Cheswick.

Actors Lou Ferrigno, Ray Park, Richard Kiel and C.J. Graham -- the dudes who played those famous tough-guy characters -- will sign autographs at the Steel City Con, which proclaims itself "Pennsylvania's Largest Toy and Pop Culture Convention."

A schedule is at www.steelcitycon.com.

Don't forget: Kevin Smith will be in nearby Oakmont on Oct. 25 hosting the U.S. premiere of his Pittsburgh-made film "Zack & Miri Make a Porno." Smith's a big fan of comic book conventions, so it wouldn't be surprising if he popped in for a visit.

SEBAK IN SEWICKLEY

Rick Sebak's latest PBS documentary, "A Ride Along the Lincoln Highway" will debut nationally Oct. 29.

Sebak, of WQED-TV, will host a VIP premiere Oct. 18 at the Sewickley Car Store, which sits along the original route of the Lincoln Highway, the nation's first coast-to-coast highway.

Launched in 1913 with a push from the first manufacturers of automobile headlights, the Lincoln Highway connected an existing patchwork of roads into a highway stretching from New York to San Francisco.

Locally, the Lincoln ran through Sewickley, Ambridge, Rochester, Beaver, Brighton Township and Ohioville until between 1928 to 1932, when the route was switched to a less congested, less foggy stretch of road between Imperial and Chester, W.Va.

TIDBITS

Brighton Township's Tia Lampone will appear both Nov. 5 and Nov. 12 on NBC's "Deal or No Deal."

Lampone previously taped her appearance, and NBC is waiting until TV's sweeps period to air it, so expect something memorable to happen.

Rusted Root's Michael Glabicki will perform at 8 p.m. Nov. 13 at Inspirosity in Beaver.

Tickets cost $45. For info visit www.inspirosity.com.

Former KDKA-AM mid-day host Mike Pintek has replaced Brian Wilson.

Not the Beach Boy Brian Wilson, but the same-named guy who worked for Baltimore radio station WHFS-FM.

Pintek is no stranger to the Baltimore area, having been raised in York, Pa., and formerly serving as morning drive news reader for WASH-FM in Washington D.C. Speculation, though, is that Pintek, who also sometimes hosts "NightTalk" on Pittsburgh's PCNC-TV, might stay in the Pittsburgh area, at least temporarily, while doing his Baltimore show by remote.

Is it too early to talk New Year's Eve?

Popular Pittsburgh cover band Velveeta has been booked for the Tick Tock Rock concert Dec. 31 at Station Square.

What, were Winger and Warrant busy?
