L-1 Identity Solutions, Inc. (NYSE: ID), a leading provider of identity solutions and services, was awarded a contract valued at $20 million from a Middle Eastern customer. The contract includes more than 1,000 HIIDE devices along with other L-1 hardware, software, services, and a three year maintenance and support program. The name of the Middle Eastern customer is not disclosed for confidentiality reasons.
Initially L-1 will develop the software that will link and expand the customer's existing databases to enroll, manage and search using multimodal biometrics. Following the infrastructure development, the contract includes the deployment of more than 1,000 HIIDE devices throughout the country for mobile identity verification using finger, face, iris recognition technology, or a combination of all three. Software and services delivery will begin immediately and all devices are expected to ship within 20 months of the contract's execution.
"The HIIDE is the most widely deployed multimodal device within U.S. defense agencies and we are seeing rapid adoption of it among various international governments and markets," said Robert V. LaPenta, Chairman, President and CEO of L-1 Identity Solutions. "Our customers believe that the HIIDE is one of the most powerful devices they have in the field to help fight the global war on terror and address other border security and identification initiatives."
The HIIDE (Hand-Held Interagency Identity Detection Equipment) is a portable enrollment and recognition device and the world's first hand-held tri-biometric system that allows users to enroll and match via any of the three primary biometrics: iris, finger and face. The iris biometric matching capabilities are based on L-1's proprietary and highly accurate Daugman '08 algorithm. The intuitive user interface makes it easy to enter biographic data to create a comprehensive database on the enrolled subject. The HIIDE provides complete functionality while connected to a host PC or when operating in the field un-tethered. Highly ruggedized, it provides superior speed and accuracy of matching in even the harshest of operating conditions. Over 6,500 devices are fielded into areas of conflict around the world today.
