Galante's lawyer, Hugh Keefe, declined to tell Tuesday, but he said he has spoken to Galante several times in the past few days and Galante is ready to serve his time.
"He knew this day was coming. He's prepared for it psychologically, he's prepared for it emotionally, and he's prepared for it physically," Keefe said. "One thing you will not ever hear Jimmy do is whine."
The federal Bureau of Prisons doesn't release the designated location for an inmate to serve a sentence until the inmate surrenders. Generally, however, it tries to keep a person within a five-hour drive of home.
Galante asked to be housed at Allenwood Federal Correctional Institution in central Pennsylvania, about a four-hour drive from greater Danbury.
When she sentenced Galante in early September, Judge Ellen Bree Burns also recommended he serve his sentence at Allenwood. While a judge's recommendation is not binding, it is generally given significant consideration.
In June, Galante pleaded guilty before Burns in U.S. District Court in New Haven to racketeering conspiracy, conspiracy to defraud the IRS, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
In addition to an 87-month prison sentence, he was ordered to pay a $100,000 fine and forfeit his ownership interest in more than 25 companies worth more than $100 million.
Notable inmates at Allenwood include Aldrich Ames, the former CIA official sentenced to serve the rest of his life behind bars after he was convicted in the 1990s of spying for the Soviet Union and then Russia.
Former Rite-Aid Corp. executive Frank Bergonzi also served prison time there on fraud charges.
FBI mole Robert Hanssen had asked to be housed at Allenwood after his conviction on federal charges, but officials deemed the prison not secure enough to restrict his communications as required by his plea agreement.
