"As a national charity with a mission to promote cleaner air, reduced greenhouse gas and increased physical activity levels of Canadians, we are very excited to be continuing to work with HSBC Bank Canada. HSBC is truly a world leader in sustainable management practices and in integrating the environment into its business practices. HSBC Bank Canada also places a priority on youth environmental education and engagement making this support of HSBC Clean Air Achievers an excellent alignment of our shared goals," said Deirdre Laframboise, co-founder and Executive Director of Clean Air Champions.
"What all of us at Clean Air Champions (CAC) are committed to is making change happen and inspiring others to adopt more sustainable lifestyles...we believe that every choice and every step counts," added Laframboise.
"Clean Air Champions has made a real difference in helping bring environmental issues directly into classrooms across Canada," said Jon Hountalas, Executive Vice President, HSBC Bank Canada. "Having access to good role models is particularly important early on in life. That's why we are very excited about the opportunity to continue to support the HSBC Clean Air Achievers Program and its valuable work in providing those environmental role models to help mentor young people."
CAC is a national charity that works with respected athletes to educate and inspire Canadians to adopt practices and lifestyles that enhance personal and environmental health. The Champions are made up of over 140 national team, Olympic and Paralympic athletes, each passionate about our environment and the health of Canadians.
HSBC Clean Air Achievers, currently running in six provinces, is a curriculum linked program that targets youth in grades 6 to 9 and educates them about the interconnections between air quality, climate change and health. The program's two main goals are to encourage youth to choose less polluting forms of travel and to increase their level of physical fitness by choosing active modes of travel (walking, rolling or cycling) to their destinations. The funds provided by HSBC Bank Canada will be dedicated to expanding the CAA program into new regions and all provinces by 2010. A portion will also be dedicated to launching the bilingual program in Quebec and in French language schools across Canada.
