"Unusual."
The York City resident won the painting, which measures 62 inches tall by 54 inches wide, through a MasterCard sweepstakes this spring.
As the grand prize winner of the company's "Priceless" campaign, Sheffer, 63, was treated to a four-day trip in September to New York City, where artist Julian Schnabel painted his likeness on broken plate shards cemented to a canvas.
Now, seven weeks after Schnabel finished the painting, it belongs to Sheffer. A crew of three movers from Queens, N.Y.-based Acumen Fine Art Logistics took about four hours on Tuesday to mount the nearly 200-pound behemoth at Sheffer's home.
"I really like it. It's really something," he said.
The rules: He'll have plenty of time to admire Schnabel's work. Even if Sheffer immediately wanted to flip the painting for some easy cash, which he doesn't, he's legally required to keep it for two years before he can sell it.
And in the short term, the painting is actually something of a financial drain.
Sheffer had to install a $1,000 burglar alarm before the painting could be delivered, and he's responsible for a yearly insurance payment of about $1,900.
"It's who did it that makes it worth that much," he said.
Family reacts: The painting -- and the man who created it -- have enchanted Sheffer's wife Maggie.
"I love it. I love the guy who painted it. He's my next husband,"
she said, joking. Maggie said Schnabel was friendly and down-to-earth during theactual painting process in September.
The New York City-based artist "didn't use his high-society on ya," she said.
Penny Wright, Sheffer's daughter, wasn't quite as taken with the portrait, but she's keenly aware of how much it's worth, and what the money could buy if her father sold the portrait.
"When I look up there, all I see is a house," she said.
