He's got a long way to go. He's got a lot more walking to do.
Buchanan started walking across the country April 14 in Cannon Beach, Ore. He travels 20 to 21 miles a day, and his goal is to reach New Hampshire by the end of November. To do that, he figures he has to average 21.4 miles daily from here on out.
"Which is certainly doable," he said.
Buchanan has logged many miles. "Why?" is a fair question.
"There's a couple of reasons," he explained. "There's an organization called the Free State Project based out of New Hampshire whose goal is to encourage liberty-oriented individuals to move to New Hampshire to make more of a difference on the state and local level. So I'm walking to promote that idea. And also I'm going to be moving there with my wife (Brooke) when we reach New Hampshire."
"I'm really trying to get the word out to people who think government has gotten too big and too invasive to let them know about the idea of this project," he added.
Buchanan also said he's walking to support U.S. representative and former presidential hopeful Ron Paul and his "campaign for liberty."
Buchanan was well-prepped for foot travel. The longtime runner said he didn't have a car until a few years after college. He grew up in Lebanon, Ind., and recalled walking to high school.
"I lived in New York City for a while, and everybody walks there," he said. Buchanan, who worked 11 years as a computer programmer, has also called Boston, Florida and Hawaii home.
"We have an RV that we sleep in at night," Buchanan said. Brooke will typically drive half a day's journey and meet Will for lunch. Then she drives the rest of the way and meets up with him later, when the two find a place to stay the night -- Wal-Mart parking lots, campgrounds and the like.
