Investigators said the last S on the electric Shoney's sign atop the restaurant fell over and continued to glow, causing the roof to catch fire some time before 6 a.m., according to Davie town spokesman Braulio Rosa.
Rosa said the letter was likely blown over by gusting winds.
Rosa said the fire burned a hole in the building's roof and spread into the kitchen but the restaurant was not yet open and no one was injured.
