And that's not necessarily a bad thing. From the film's first close-up of his sparkling baby blues, you know that this mega-popular Disney Channel incarnation is all about the heartthrob. Thank goodness, because he's the best part of what is otherwise a squeaky-clean teen movie of the week, with extra confetti.
What Disney accomplished in 2006 is worth a mention. It struck a chord with young audiences with its pretty clever premise: a musical about a high school musical. What resulted was a fun, bright production.
Surely the producers knew it would be a hit, but they probably had no idea it would become such a phenomenon.
Three of its six leads became super famous, super fast: Popular basketball player Troy (Efron), his love interest Gabriella (Vanessa Anne Hudgens) and the comic relief Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale).
In the latest installment, Troy and the gang -- which also includes his best bud Chad, (Corbin Bleu), Sharpay's twin brother Ryan (Lucas Grabeel), and overachiever Taylor (Monique Coleman) -- are facing some tough decisions as senior year is quickly flying by.
Writer
Peter Barsocchini and director Kenny Ortega don't veer far from "HSM's" successful formula. Its song and dance numbers are flashy and fun and its plot isn't terribly exciting. There are sweet moments (a nice waltz number on the high school's roof) and some sour notes (a contrived guys-only routine in a junk yard). But they deliver what the audience wants: cheesy, glossy fun.
Who knows if all of "High School Musical's" stars will forge careers out of this moment. But the creators were obviously banking on Efron, whose star shines the brightest. Fans will appreciate the many lingering close-ups of this pretty boy, who actually can sing and dance.
And while his character is as straight-off-the-page as the others, Efron's the only one who really makes "High School Musical 3" sing.
