Another Rolling Bottom? (By Genevieve Hawkins) October is known as a month for stock market crashes, but this time around the disaster on Wall Street more closely resembles the Titanic going down rather than a single spectacular plummet. Last week featured gains that quickly turned to losses, with the Dow losing 5.3% by Friday, while the S&P 500 dropped 6.8% and the Nasdaq off 9.3%. Now that a global recession is getting priced into the equation, there could be rallies, but they will likely be followed by sharp sell offs. For the coming week investors will be watching for Thursday's report on US third quarter GDP, which is likely to show that the country truly is in recession. The Fed will meet on Wednesday and is expected to cut interest rates to their historical 1% low, but this may have a counterintuitive effect on the markets as investors sell in the face of increasingly desperate and meaningless measures. Earnings reports will also be coming out in droves, which will give market participants plenty to sort through. A considerable amount of pain has not yet been priced into the system. Rather than rallies, it seems more likely that bad news will lead to at least one crash through prior lows this week.
