Eck this month bought Anderson Ford in Omaha, now Rusty Eck Ford Omaha.
It's Eck's fourth location, joining businesses in Wichita, Hutchinson and St. Joseph, Mo. Ford and Toyota are the lead brands at the locations.
Eck said the Omaha dealership fell into his lap as he searched for a fourth site in the Midwest.
"I'd been looking for a new opportunity, and I got a call about this dealership that wasn't doing much. OK profit, but not a lot of business."
The Omaha Ford dealership, built in 1995, won't require a lot of retrofitting into Eck's signature "lifestyle center" showroom style, he said.
"It needs a little more customer-friendly service drive," he said.
"That thing was added on after the building was built in 1995, and it needs some work... to catch up with our philosophy of meeting or beating all service prices."
Eck said more businesses for his auto group translate into more "synergies, cost savings with Ford Credit, a better pedigree of banks to move financing to."
"We're always looking for new opportunities," he said. "And sometimes opportunities fall into your lap like this one did."
While Eck's auto group is growing, his Wichita Ford dealership has moved solidly into the top 10 nationally in new car and truck sales.
According to internal Ford numbers, Rusty Eck Wichita has moved between fifth and ninth on the list of the nation's top Ford sellers in recent weeks.
On Tuesday, Rusty Eck was tied at eighth, with 156 units sold this month, ranking at or just below dealerships in Michigan, California, Texas and Nebraska.
When general manager Craig Minten joined Rusty Eck Wichita in 2007, the dealership ranked about 350th on the sales list of 3,500 dealerships, he said.
"Our goal is a world championship," he said.
Successful dealerships can and should expand, seizing opportunities despite the bad economy, said a spokesman for the National Automotive Dealers Association.
" (Eck's success) really isn't unusual," said Chuck Cyrill, a NADA spokesman.
Auto financing is readily available in many areas and is a local issue, Cyrill said.
"Local banks, community banks, credit unions are flush with cash to lend," Cyrill said.
"People are pulling money out of the markets to deposit there, so now they've got money to lend."
