Mike Maniscalco, the lead host of "The Fanatics" from 6-9 a.m. weekdays on the FM sports station, will get a noon-1 p.m. daily slot for a local show, said Dave Shore, 99.9 The Fan's programming director, adding that Dan Patrick's morning show and Tim Brando's show won't be aired after Jan. 5. Shore assured Carolina Hurricanes fans that the change would not hurt 99.9's hockey coverage.
McClatchey Broadcasting, which owns the AM sports stations 850 The Buzz and 620 The Bull, expects to pick up Patrick's show but not Brando's. McClatchey split with ESPN about two weeks ago, saying it wanted to go back to airing "Imus In The Morning" with Don Imus. Owner Billy McClatchey, who also had disagreed with ESPN on how much of the national network's programming he had to carry, said his company had a chance to match 99.9's offer to ESPN and chose not to.
General manager Mike Morgan of 99.9 The Fan said, however, that the Capitol Broadcasting station snagged ESPN only after a "very competitive" process with the other local sports radio stations. Morgan said 99.9 had been engaged in informal conversations with ESPN "off and on" over the past eight months to a year.
