Family members accurately described the tattoos of the victim, who was tentatively identified the victim as James Joseph Lamy, 36, of Converse.
Lamy's body was discovered by a fisherman in some brush approximately six feet from the edge of the water in a rural area of Kendall County, about 20 miles southeast of Comfort.
According to investigators, it appears Lamy's body was dumped at the location. No personal items, jewelry or identification were located nearby.
According to KCSO, the victim was last seen by friends in San Antonio around noon on the same day that his body was discovered.
Investigators said the victim had an extensive criminal history, and it is believed he had affiliations to a known prison gang.
Now that officials have identified the victim, they are trying to determine who committed the murder.
The Texas Rangers are assisting with the investigation.
