The NFL earlier this year voted to bring the Super Bowl to Indianapolis in 2012, a game that Price Waterhouse Cooper estimates will pump $250 million into the local economy.
The CVB board has started the planning process to attract out-of-state visitors to Kokomo for lodging and entertainment.
"The Super Bowl should be high on the list," board member Kim LaFollette said of the long-range plans now being finalized by the board.
Kokomo area hotels have been approached by the Super Bowl planning committee and rooms have been committed, according to Peggy Hobson, CVB executive director.
Board President Kelly Karickhoff said the CVB should try to obtain visitor profiles from previous Super Bowl events and determine what activities they are looking for during their stay in central Indiana.
"We should be discussing events that could take place in Kokomo on the Super Bowl weekend," she said.
Board members discussed a free shuttle from the Indianapolis airport to Kokomo and free transportation to activities in Indianapolis that weekend.
Kim Mills, CVB director of sales, noted the impact on Kokomo could depend on the teams playing in the 2012 Super Bowl.
She said fans from the Midwest would be more likely to drive to the event and stay in Kokomo while fans from the East and West coasts would probably fly into Indianapolis and be more likely to stay closer to Indianapolis.
In other business, Jennifer McMullen with CVB said two new events will be taking place in Howard County next spring.
McMullen said Kokomo was selected over Bowling Green, Ky., and Auburn to host the National Corvette Restorers Society in April. She said CVB has already started the process of finding local Corvette owners that would be willing to put their cars on display at the Automotive Heritage Museum.
The Indiana Dart Throwers Association will be having a three-day competition in Kokomo next spring. The event is expected to attract 200 people. The CVB is looking for 10 taverns with electronic dart games.
Sherry Matlock, visitor information specialist, is researching convention and visitors bureaus around the state to upgrade the local Web site and the use of blogs.
Matlock has started a blog at VisitKokomo.wordpress.com.
The CVB is also adding a Kokomo page on MySpace and Facebook.
Local residents who want to be included for an e-mail newsletter and calendar of events should contact Matlock at (765) 457-6802.
