--First American Title Insurance Co. has closed its Victorville office because of poor market conditions.
The office's parent company, Santa Ana-based insurance giant The First American Corp., reported losses of $8.3 million in the third quarter of this year.
As a result, the corporation laid off 1,250 employees.
Friday was the final day of business for the local title insurance office, which once employed some 30 people.
The number of those who have lost their job is unknown as corporate spokeswoman Carrie Gaska declined to answer questions about the number of employees affected, how long the office was open or what will happen to the building, located at 12640 Hesperia Road near Silica Road.
Calls to the office since Monday are being forwarded to First American's San Bernardino branch, according to receptionist Tiffany Hawn.
Gaska said First American insurance services will still be available in the Victor Valley through the San Bernardino office.
