The company said sales of trucks fell 51 percent while sales of cars fell 35 percent.
"The market has been shrinking for three years, but in October we saw a dramatic decline for the industry and GM," said Mark LaNeve, GM North America vice president of vehicle sales.
Sales of large SUVs made in Janesville were off at least 70 percent in October and are down at least 35 percent for the year. GM said it will end production of the models in December.
"If you adjust for population growth, this is probably the worst industry sales month in the post-WWII era," LaNeve added. "We believe there is considerable pent-up demand from the last three years, but until the credit markets open up and consumer confidence improves, the entire U.S. economy, and any industry like autos that relies on financing, will suffer.
Here is how sales of SUVs made in Janesville fared this month, compared with October 2007 and how they've fared so far this year compared with the first 10 months of 2007:
-- Chevrolet Suburbans: Down 70 percent in October; down 38 percent year-to-date.
-- Chevrolet Tahoes: Down 77 percent in October; down 36 percent year-to-date.
-- GMC Yukons: Down 76 percent; down 40 percent year-to-date.
