The Bulldogs are all over the map.
Entering their 10th game of the season, the Bulldogs rank seventh nationally against the run (allowing 88.9 yards per game), 30th in total defense (306.4) and 75th in pass defense (217.6). After allowing 87 points the past two weeks against LSU and Florida, Georgia is giving up 23.4 points per game, the highest total since Mark Richt became coach.
"Obviously rushing has been our strong point," cornerback Asher Allen said Tuesday. "We haven't been able to be our best at pass defense, and if you look at the talent, it compares to some of the top in the nation. It's about being consistent."
The defenders delivered in Georgia's wins over South Carolina, Arizona State, Tennessee and Vanderbilt, holding those teams to an average of 11.25 points per game. They were put in difficult situations last week because of a mistake-prone offense, and the Gators riddled them for seven touchdowns.
"You can't have a short field against a team like Florida with that many weapons and expect to get turnovers or for good things to happen," linebacker Rennie Curran said. "We kind of set ourselves up for defeat with some of the mistakes that we made."
Luger visits practice
Former WCW wrestler Lex Luger, who routinely put his victims in a "torture rack" move, spoke at Monday's practice. Luger, whose real name is Larry Pfohl, is a former teammate of Richt at Miami.
"I used to have the video game on Nintendo 64, the WCW Revenge," Allen said. "I used to play that, and he used to be my character. I went undefeated with him."
Pfohl got into wrestling after brief stints in the NFL, CFL and the USFL. He is a born-again Christian after a troubled stretch in which he got addicted to painkillers, was arrested on felony drug possession and was jailed for violating terms of his probation.
Richt said he was a hit with Florida State recruits many Januarys ago when Luger recognized him at a wrestling event at the Tallahassee Civic Center.
Underrated amusement
Kentucky's Rich Brooks may be the SEC's most underrated coach, clinching a third consecutive bowl despite losing leading receiver Dicky Lyons Jr. and leading rusher Derrick Locke to injuries. He's also underrated in the humor department, as evidenced when he was asked if Georgia is tougher to judge after last week's game because Florida is playing a different game than everybody else.
"They didn't play a different game against Ole Miss, did they?" Brooks said.
When the reporter said he meant how Florida was playing lately, Brooks said, "Even the genius Urban Meyer had a bad game, by golly. How about that? Holy cow."
Matching last season
With Florida having the inside track to the SEC East title, the 7-2 Bulldogs now are trying to get to 11-2 for a second consecutive season. Georgia has posted 11 or more wins in consecutive seasons only once, when the Bulldogs went 13-1 in 2002 and 11-3 the following year.
"We're really excited about the chance to win 11," quarterback Matthew Stafford said. "It would take all the stars being aligned in the right way to play in the SEC championship game, but this season still has some positives in it."
Said fullback Brannan Southerland: "It may not be the way we all drew it out, but we can still have a great season."
Odds and ends
Georgia has a 48-11-2 series lead against Kentucky. ... The Bulldogs had a plus-3 turnover ratio against LSU but was minus-4 against Florida. ... Middle linebacker Dannell Ellerbe was used more like a defensive end last week when Georgia went with three down linemen and five defensive backs. ... Richt on the joy of being on Raycom this week: "We've got to play another game as soon as possible. I'm glad we've got a 12:30 kickoff."
