The U.S. auto giant had already decided to divest its money-losing midsize-truck business, and approached Isuzu.
"There won't be a full acquisition," said Hosoi, suggesting that Isuzu is willing to cooperate on the grounds that General Motors maintain its involvement to a certain degree.
Isuzu may produce trucks and engines that the U.S. partner will discontinue.
The firms may cooperate in North American sales, using General Motors' dealership network.
