American Equity Inv. Life Leads Thursday's AMBG as Global Insurance Index Declines 6.11%

OLDWICK, N.J., Nov 07, 2008 (A. M. Best via COMTEX) -- AMEB | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The AMBG closed Thursday, Nov. 6, at 685.20 (-6.11%). All 15 A.M. Best stock indexes declined. Leading A.M. Best's Global Insurance Composite Index (AMBG) were American Equity Inv. Life (+24.04%) and Conseco (+18.75%). Trailing the list of global insurance stocks were Gainsco (-23.62%) and XL Capital (-21.05%).

The U.S. Health and HMO Insurance Index led the sector indexes, with the Global Multi-Line Insurance Index trailing the list. In descending order, the A.M. Best Insurance Stock Indexes closed at:

The European Insurance Index (AMBEUR) closed at 670.11 (-8.65%)%. Leading the AMBEUR were Old Mutual plc (+3.17%) and Beazley Group (+2.33%). Trailing the AMBEUR were Hannover Rueckversicherungs AG (-15.99%) and Swiss Reinsurance (-12.83%).

The Asia/Pacific Insurance Index (AMBAP) closed at 1134.66 (-6.88%). Leading the AMBAP were Singapore Reinsurance Corp. (0.00%) and QBE Insurance Group Ltd. (-0.84%). Trailing the AMBAP were LIG Insurance Co. (-14.76%) and Meritz Fire & Marine Insurance (-12.89%).

The Global Reinsurance Index (AMBGR) closed at 864.53 (-5.76%). Leading the AMBGR were Castlepoint Holdings (+14.27%) and Flagstone Reinsurance Holdings (+1.74%). Trailing the AMBGR were XL Capital (-21.05%) and Hannover Rueckversicherungs AG (-15.99%).

The Global Broker Index (AMBGB) closed at 931.00 (-3.49%). Leading the AMBGB were Jardine Lloyd Thompson Group plc (+0.81%) and Brown & Brown (-0.29%). Trailing the AMBGB were eHealth Inc. (-7.32%) and AmTrust Financial Services Inc. (-7.23%).

The U.S. Property/Casualty Index (AMBUPC) closed at 998.99 (-4.18%). Leading the AMBUPC were Castlepoint Holdings (+14.27%) and Tower Group Inc. (+10.02%). Trailing the AMBUPC were Gainsco (-23.62%) and XL Capital (-21.05%).

The U.S. Multi-Line Insurance Index (AMBUML) closed at 151.23 (-8.75%). Leading the AMBUML were HCC Insurance Holdings (-1.94%) and Horace Mann Educators (-2.53%). Trailing the AMBUML were Hartford Financial Services Group (-20.82%) and Atlantic American Corp. (-13.01%).

The U.S. Life Insurance Index (AMBUL) closed at 656.51 (-7.08%). Leading the AMBUL were American Equity Inv. Life (+24.04%) and Conseco (+18.75%). Trailing the AMBUL were Prudential Financial Inc. (-16.61%) and Protective Life Corp. (-15.50%).

The U.S. Life and Health/HMO Insurance Index (AMBULH) closed at 666.30 (-5.13%). Leading the AMBULH were American Equity Inv. Life (+24.04%) and Conseco (+18.75%). Trailing the AMBULH were Prudential Financial Inc. (-16.61%) and Protective Life Corp. (-15.50%).

The U.S. Health and HMO Index (AMBUH) closed at 675.21 (-2.97%). Leading the AMBUH were Universal American (+1.14%) and Triple-S Management Corp. (-0.47%). Trailing the AMBUH were Cigna (-10.67%) and Unum Group (-5.82%).

The U.S. Insurance Brokers Index (AMBUB) closed at 911.23 (-3.61%). Leading the AMBUB were Brown & Brown (-0.29%) and Aon (-3.21%). Trailing the AMBUB were eHealth Inc. (-7.32%) and AmTrust Financial Services Inc. (-7.23%).
