Final score: FIU 22, Arkansas State 21 and another record-breaking night for T.Y. "Goodbye."
With FIU down 21-15 and 2:14 left in the game, Hilton fumbled an end-around handoff from quarterback Paul McCall, scooped up the ball as he was being chased by Red Wolves, and found a wide open Mertile downfield for a touchdown to lift FIU over Arkansas State.
"Paul pulled out early on the handoff," Hilton said. "When I recovered the fumble and saw Junior wide open all I thought was I gotta get him the ball."
"I had to get it off," Hilton said. "When Junior caught the ball I heard the crowd go crazy and I heard their chants and I started laughing."
In addition to the AOL "goodbye" sign-off that is played at FIU Stadium after each score by Hilton (whose nickname is "Goodbye"), the FIU fans serenaded him with chants of "T.Y. for the Heisman" after the game-winning touchdown pass.
Mertile, who had no defender within 20 yards at the ASU 5, couldn't wait for the ball to come down.
"It was up there for a long time," Mertile said. 'I kept telling myself 'This is the money ball. This is the money ball. I can't drop this one.' "
McCall -- who threw a couple of blocks to give Hilton time to recover the fumble -- was glad to see Hilton connect with Mertile.
"One out of every three times T.Y. actually gets it where it's supposed to go," joked McCall, who threw for 321 yards, falling 49 yards shy of an FIU single-game record. "But you know what, this was his one and it was the only one that counted."
In addition to throwing the decisive touchdown, Hilton broke the school record with 199 receiving yards and finished with 252 all-purpose, the second highest in school history. Hilton set the record last week with 295 yards against Louisana.
Hilton leads the nation in all-purpose yards.
"T.Y. is a heady player," FIU coach Mario Cristobal said. "All I was thinking was go for 1. Make sure we get the extra point, because I knew that ball would be caught."
The Golden Panthers would not have found themselves with the chance to win if not for a gritty performance from their defense and an school-record five field goals from kicker Dustin Rivest.
After Arkansas State went up 21-12 early in the fourth quarter, the FIU defense stopped the Red Wolves on three consecutive possessions.
Robert Mitchell and Ryan Martinez led FIU with 11 and 10 tackles, respectively.
Linebacker Toronto Smith got 2.5 sacks and three tackles for loss for the Golden Panthers.
"All spring and summer we have worked on fighting through adversity," Smith said. "We made up our minds that we were not going to lose this game."
Down 22-21 with 1:13 left, Arkansas State reached the FIU 40, but there was linebacker Franklin Brown ready to seal the game.
When Brown picked off Red Wolves quarterback Corey Leonard at the FIU 35, FIU Stadium erupted.
"We saw that play all week on film," Brown said. "I knew the play was coming. I was not surprised."
